Proper Nail Care to Avoid Ingrown Nails

Ingrown toenails can be a very painful condition that can result in further health complications and prove to be a serious problem for diabetics or if it is infected. In order to prevent ingrown toenails, it is important to practice good habits and stop the ones that will end up increasing your chances of developing an ingrown.

Ways to avoid getting ingrown toenails are

  1. Cutting your toenails straight across
  2. Use a toenail clipper to trim toes instead of smaller nail clippers
  3. If using scissors to cut your toenails, clip in smaller movements
  4. Footwear that allows for enough space
  5. Keep your nails clean

It is very important to keep away from trimming or cutting your cuticles and to ensure your pedicurist doesn’t touch them as well. Footwear is also an important aspect of avoiding ingrown toenails because ill-fitting shoes can apply pressure on the nails and toes which can cause the nail to end up growing out crooked.

When cutting your nails remember to

  1. Use clean tools
  2. Avoid cutting your cuticles
  3. Cutting your toenails straight across
  4. Don’t cut your nails too short
