Preventing Ingrown Toenails

As you may already know, some people are more predisposed to ingrown toenails than others due to the way their nails naturally grow, which is genetic. However, sometimes ingrown toenails can develop due to environmental factors. This means that there are some things that you can personally do to reduce your chances of getting an ingrown toenail.

The most important thing to do is to trim your nails the right way. It is very common to see people curving their nails to match the shape of their toes. However, this results in corners jutting out, which may eventually grow into the flesh to produce an ingrown toenail. The correct way to trim your toenails is always straight across.

Another common mistake that people make is cutting the nails too short. While keeping your nails trimmed is good for hygiene and ensures that dirt and bacteria does not get trapped under it, when the nails are too short they can yet again grow into the toe as they get longer. Trim your nails to a moderate length, so that they are level with the edge of your toes.

A habit that contributes to ingrown toenails, but often is not spared too much thought, is the use of ill-fitting footwear. A surprising number of people, mostly women, are guilty of wearing shoes that are too small for them. When you constantly wear shoes that are too small, you are creating a lot of pressure on your toes, and consequently your nails, pushing them to grow at an awkward angle and into the flesh. Wearing comfortable shoes is extremely important not only to prevent ingrown toenails, but to keep your feet healthy and prevent other conditions such as bunions.
