Do Sports Increase your Risk of Ingrown Toenails?

You use your feet everyday. Whether it’s walking to get somewhere or using your feet to move a table closer to you, they are one of our most important tools for living– which is why we should take care of them.  Sports are one of the most popular activities among people around the world and can offer great exercise and fun with friends and family, however there are specific sports that require use of feet more than others and thus put you at higher of developing an ingrown toenail.

  • Ballet
  • Football
  • Kickboxing
  • Soccer
  • Running

A commonality between all the sports above is that they require more work put it into your feet than other sports. Ballet for example involves literally being on your toes which can stimulate the development of an ingrown because your nails are constantly under pressure. Sports may result in an ingrown by trauma to the toe caused by direct impact which is common in football, kickboxing, and soccer. In addition, running is also applying pressure to your nail and in all cases, your shoes are moist from the secretion of sweat from your foot as you are staying active. This moisture might cause your skin to be more susceptible to be an ingrown because it is softening the skin surrounding the nail. There is an endless list of sports around the world with different variations and rules so there is a high chance that the 5 sports above are not the only sports that would put you at risk of getting an ingrown nail.
