Athletes and Ingrown Toenails

Athletes, especially those who play soccer or run track, are prone to ingrown toenails. Ingrown toenails develop when the nail grows to the side and burrows into the flesh of the toe. This can cause pain and swelling that can disturb the athlete’s performance. There are several factors that cause ingrown toenails, including wearing the wrong size shoe and repeated pressure on the toes.

It is important for athletes to wear the correct size shoe because if it is too tight, there would be too much pressure applied on the nail while playing sports. This would push the nail down and may result to ingrown toenails. Athletes should be mindful of the condition of their toes and take precaution to avoid getting ingrown toenails.

Ways to prevent ingrown toenail for athletes include letting the toes breathe after playing sports or training. Soaking the feet in warm water with Epsom salts can also help relieve pain on the feet and loosen up the nails. If the ingrown toenails has already develop, do not try to remove it on your own. Consult with a foot doctor to discuss possible treatments and to prevent it from coming back.
