Could I get an Ingrown Toenail?

One common myth regarding ingrown toenails is that only adults can have them. This is false anyone at any age can get an ingrown toenail. Ingrown nails are most common on the big toe. Individuals with particularly thick or curved nails are most susceptible to having an ingrown nail. Often an ingrown nail can be the result of an injury. For example, poorly fitting shoes, improper trimming of nails, and highly active lifestyles can contribute to having ingrown nails. Those with autoimmune diseases, diabetes, and other vascular problems should immediately treat their ingrown nails because they are at the greatest risk of infection.

An ingrown nail will burrow into the skin on the side of the nail, with this suffers experience discomfort and often pain. The nail will continue to grow in the incorrect direction and can penetrate the skin. This can be extremely dangerous because there would be an open wound in an area where there is already a lot of bacteria, increasing the risk of infection. At times this can result in permanent changes to the nail.
