If your child is experiencing pain when they are walking, or directly on their toes or by their toenails, inspect for an ingrown toenail, which is a condition that can cause pain in those who have it. To decrease your child’s chances of getting an ingrown toenail, you can follow the steps below to save your child from the pain that an ingrown toenail brings.

One way to prevent ingrown toenails in children is ensuring that they are wearing proper fitting shoes that are not too narrow. Be sure not to get them toe pointed shoes, or shoes that are too tight. Especially if your child has wide feet!

Another way to prevent ingrown toenails in your children’s toes is by proper cutting of the toenails. Toenails must always be cut straight across and never curved. You must also leave enough of the nail hanging over the nail bed so you do not cut the nail too short. You can also file the nails gently so they are rounded and not sharp.

Ingrown toenails can be very painful and unbearable even for adults, and even more so for children. If your child is suffering from an ingrown toenail or even signs of an ingrown toenail, contact us right away to schedule a consultation with one of our over 80 podiatrists.
