What is an ingrown toenail?

This condition happens when the nail starts pressing against the skin that is surrounding the nail. This leads to the nail growing into the skin, instead of outward.

This condition is usually painful, and it causes swelling and infections if not treated properly. Therefore, consulting with the doctor is important to avoid further complications.

  • Causes could vary but it mainly includes:

    • Trimming the nails too short

    • Trauma to the nails

    • Shoes that press against the nails

How do I know if I have an ingrown nail?

Symptoms are:

  • Discomfort around the sides of the nail

  • Bruising on the sides of the nail

  • Burning feeling due to the tenderness of the skin

  • Inflammation of the flesh

The ingrown nail needs to be treated by the doctor to prevent further complications. If not treated in a timely manner, the nail could further damage the bones and nerves. More complications can also arise especially for patients with diabetes.

To protect from getting an ingrown toenail condition:

  • Avoid trimming the nails too short

  • Cut the nails straight, instead of matching the shape of the toe

  • Wear comfortable shoes, and avoid wearing tight shoes that press against the nails

  • Protect feet from injuries
