Though ingrown toenails are usually developed from wrong footwear or trauma, they can also be hereditary. This is called onychocryptosis which is a condition where the corner or side of your nail is growing into your skin.

Since ingrown toenails may occur from the shape of the toe or nail, this trait can then be inherited or passed down genetically. Diseases such as forms of arthritis may also affect how the toe is shaped which can then cause an ingrown toenail.

In conclusion, ingrown toenails themselves are not genetic, however, genetic factors can indirectly make an ingrown hereditary, and thus make you more susceptible if your parents also suffer from ingrown toenails.
